Health benefits of local culture and arts

A new Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) study has found that going to arts events could be good for your health and Ealing’s Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery is offering locals the chance to see a wide range of artworks for free during the current holiday season.

The DCMS study revealed: “There is a growing body of evidence illustrating the links between cultural and heritage engagement and health and wellbeing. Research by the World Health Organisation and University College London has found cultural engagement can help to prevent, treat, and manage physical and mental health problems.”

The latest display at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery, For Art’s Sake x Pitzhanger: Original Works on Paper, features an eclectic selection of art and runs until 12 January 2025. The exhibition also includes work from Ealing-based artists Iona Stern, David Cottingham and Martin Langford.

Iona Stern creates hand painted silkscreen monotypes in her Ealing studio.

David Cottingham’s work is inspired by landscapes, dancers, cities, and the emotional power of colour and light, describing his work as “abstracted improvisations on the two themes that most inspire me, the human body in motion and the spirit of place”.

Martin Langford is an award winning printmaker creating  affordable, relatable social commentaries on the environment, politics, human nature and the work ethic, all with a humorous twist. Parents of young children might recognise themselves in his mezzotint entitled After the Storm.

The exhibition at Pitzhanger has been curated by Erica Davis, director of For Arts Sake, an Ealing gallery established in 1978 and offers one of largest collections of limited edition and original prints in the world.
