Grass fire risk remains high after two Greenford fires and Southall blaze

The London Fire Brigade has warned that the risk of grass fires remains high despite cooler temperatures, after firefighters tackled three significant incidents in Greenford and Southall during a busy week across the capital.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a grass fire near Cowgate Road in Greenford on 9 August 2026 while four engines and around 25 firefighters attended a garden fire on Dormer’s Wells Lane in Southall the same day.

Three days later (12 August 2026), six engines and around 40 firefighters tackled another grass fire at Perivale Park in Greenford.

The incidents came during a week in which London Fire Brigade received more than 9,000 emergency calls and crews were sent to more than 4,000 incidents. Its Control Room received 1,782 calls relating to grass fires.

Assistant Commissioner Pamela Oparaocha said: “Despite the drop in temperatures this week, London’s parks and green spaces are still extremely dry, so the risk of grass fires remains high.”

The Brigade is urging people to avoid barbecues in parks and public spaces, dispose of cigarettes safely and not light bonfires.
