Teenagers from underrepresented backgrounds are getting the chance to try music production, songwriting and live performance through a free Saturday Club at Ealing’s University of West London’s (UWL) London College of Music campus in Ealing.
The 20-week programme is open to 13 to 16-year-olds nominated by their schools and gives students the opportunity to learn in a university environment while working alongside other young musicians.
Led by music tutor Vincenzo Maxia, the sessions have seen students form bands, write their own songs and perform every week. Some of those taking part had never played an instrument before joining the club.
Alongside live performance, students are also learning recording, mixing and digital production skills while building confidence and creativity.
Vincenzo Maxia, music tutor at the University of West London, said: “This club helps young people build practical skills, boost their confidence, and learn about exciting career opportunities in music, audio engineering, and the wider creative sector.”
Krishna Maroo, outreach manager at the University of West London, said the programme was designed to widen participation and encourage young people to explore creative opportunities.
The programme will finish with a national showcase at Somerset House in July.
