Consultation expected for Southfield Road safety crossing

A long-awaited public consultation to implement a pedestrian crossing on Southfield Road is expected in early 2026 following years of lobbying Labour-run Ealing Council by residents and local Liberal Democrat councillors.

Southfield Road, which links Acton and Chiswick, has a 20mph speed limit but residents claim drivers regularly exceed it. Community speed checks over the past decade have recorded buses and cars travelling well above the limit.

Local Liberal Democrat councillors and residents have called for safety measures, including an upgraded pedestrian crossing and electronic speed displays. They argue these changes are needed to reduce the risk of accidents. Campaigners claim the proposals had been overlooked by Ealing Council until recently.

According to the LibDems, Ealing Council has begun site surveys and investigations and a formal public consultation is likely to take place early 2026.

Andrew Steed, Liberal Democrat councillor for Southfield, said: “Liberal Democrats say for many years the Southfield Councillors have worked with the local community to monitor and address speeding issues in Southfield Road and it has taken nearly ten years for Ealing Labour to take any notice of this issue. It is good to see that there is finally some progress on the matter.”
