Southall fire prompts smoking safety warning from London Fire Brigade

A fire that broke out in the early hours of Saturday (2 August 2025) morning at a row of workshop garage units in Southall has led London Fire Brigade to renew warnings over the dangers of carelessly discarded smoking materials.

Crews were called to The Green shortly after midnight, where part of two vehicles and half of a shipping container were damaged in the blaze. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The fire service received the first of 11 emergency calls at 12.06am. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Southall, Hayes and Ealing fire stations attended the scene and the blaze was brought under control by 1.12am.

Investigators believe the fire was accidental, sparked by the unsafe disposal of smoking materials.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “If you’re a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy your home but also cost you your life.”

The Brigade is encouraging residents to use its online home fire safety checker.

The spokesperson added: “The online tool will ask you a series of questions that will help us work out the level of risk in your home, or the home of someone you care for. It only takes a few minutes to get tailored advice to keep yourself and loved ones safe from fire.”
