On 10 October 2024, residents in the Northolt Mandeville ward will take part in a by-election to vote for a new ward councillor.
EALING.NEWS has asked all candidates standing 7 questions about who they are, what they hope to deliver and why they want residents to vote for them.
Eltayeb Omima standing for the Workers Party in Northolt Mandeville answers the questions:
Tell us a bit about yourself, your priorities for the ward and why you want to be councillor for Northolt Mandeville?
I have been a resident of Northolt Mandeville for many years, and as a senior carer, a mother of three, and the general secretary of the Sudanese Community in London, I’ve dedicated my life to helping those around me. My commitment to the community runs deep, not only through my professional work but also through the numerous volunteer roles I’ve held. In Northolt, we face real challenges that need addressing, and I believe my background makes me well-suited to represent the voices of local people.
In my work with the weekly youth club project, I’ve focused on providing vital services to young people in Northolt. These workshops address key issues such as health, career opportunities, drug awareness, the dangers of gangs, and building life skills. These are real issues for our youth, particularly in Northolt where many young people feel overlooked or vulnerable. I’ve also led the women’s club, where we support local women with sessions on health education, preventing social isolation, and providing guidance on navigating the housing system—a critical issue for many residents in our ward.
What motivates you?
My motivation comes from my love for this community. Northolt Mandeville is my home, and I’ve seen firsthand how the people here have been let down by those in power. As a councillor, I will use my voice to advocate for the needs of the people, making sure that our community is heard, respected, and well-served. My work with the Sudanese community and local initiatives has shown me that real change is possible when we come together, and I am ready to lead the fight for a better future for Northolt Mandeville. The Workers Party offers a vision of real change, and I am determined to bring that change to our ward.
Why do you want to become a councillor?
I am standing as a candidate for councillor because I know firsthand the challenges faced by the residents of Northolt Mandeville. Whether it’s dealing with housing issues, the impact of anti-social behaviour, or simply not having the right resources in place for our community, I’ve seen how these problems affect families and individuals. Northolt deserves a councillor who understands these issues deeply and is committed to fighting for real, lasting change.
Housing and regeneration: I will advocate for the regeneration of Northolt in a way that prioritises affordable housing for local families, ensuring that new developments benefit the people who live here, not just developers.
Supporting vulnerable people: I will ensure that Northolt Mandeville’s vulnerable residents—whether elderly, disabled, or facing difficult circumstances—receive the support they need through properly funded services.
Community safety and crime reduction: I will fight for increased neighbourhood policing and take firm action on anti-social behaviour, addressing the root causes such as poorly managed HMOs that disrupt the community.
Leisure centres and activities for all ages: I will work to improve and expand our local leisure centres and ensure they provide activities for all ages, creating safe, healthy spaces for residents to engage in sport and recreation.
School education and adult learning: I will push for better resources in our schools and for expanding adult learning opportunities so that residents of all ages can improve their skills and prospects.
Children’s and adult social care: I will ensure that children and adults in need of social care are supported with high-quality services that are adequately funded and accessible to all.
